Hurricane

Posted on May 12th, 2009 by Bird : Bird Bird
Friday morning I walked the dogs in the morning sunlight and thought about how beautiful it was under the shade of all those old spirits (trees) and a few hours later?  They're all gone.  My yard is now full sun with a few sparse trees that aren't leaning.  Buck said he saw a  tornado in the canyon behind our house.  The biggest trees got pushed over --the ground lifting with their roots like a rug.  Many of the other big ones broke.

The house is fine.  We're fine.

A big limb fell on the living room and held the roof on.  Another big tree is suspended by four small ones over the top of my kitchen.  A couple big trees landed on the green house.   A tree landed on everyone's house around us, but the roof damage is slight.

It was really hard getting home Friday evening will all the trees on the road.  We had to climb through the fallen trees either way we went to get to our door.  My dad came and helped Buck cut through all the trees in our driveway on Saturday.  I am putting some pictures on flickr.com

This is my first day back at work.  It's the hardest part.  I just sit here waiting for Help Desk questions.  Besides being boring, it's hard to do knowing the world has changed dramatically outside this place (knowing there's so much to accomplish).

I was looking for gasoline on Friday before I came home (I'd already talked to Buck on the phone) and I went to Herrin (20 miles East).  That was a really interesting direction to go --the same path as the storm.  The devastation went for such a long way!  At least it gave me a glimpse of the big picture before I got home to my own personal picture.  Needless to say, I didn't find any gasoline until I went to Anna (20 miles South).

All the neighbors worked together to clear the roads.  I can't believe how quickly things got done.  We all get together in the evening for a potluck.  That sure simplifies things.

We're still crawling under a fallen tree to get to our front stairs and there are some small trees that are leaning dramatically over that one threatening to fall.  I'm not looking forward to the rain that's on the way.  A little rain.  A little wind and we have more trees to climb!

Beth I'm so glad you're safe…and so sorry about all those trees and all the destruction.  Just went over to flickr to look at your pictures.  Your house is so quaint and beautiful.  It looks like it will be a different place when all the trees are cleaned away.  Don't know what to say that honors the place you find yourself in right now.  Sadness for the trees, relief that you're well and that your house wasn't demolished.  Blessings, friend, during this time of change.

Thankfully you all and the house is safe, Beth. I remember when this happened in Miami three years back. Seeing damaged and broken trees is so depressing; but today as I walk through the park and see the trees back to life, I am thankful that nature bounces back.

Neighbors got together…how wonderful!

Yes, Kathy I thought it was the old trees that made this place so beautiful so now I'm thinking dogwoods.  They grow fast and feed the wildlife and happen to be fabulously beautiful.  Now that I have full northern exposure, I have the perfect habitat for them.  I'm already transplanting!

Asteri, I definitely have that feeling too.  I feel challenged to create a new beauty that is as magical as the old one was … can't match those 300 year old trees … but I can sure try for something to inspire the next generation.

Yeah Meenakshi, the first thing I said when I saw the shape of that storm on the radar was, “That looks like Florida.”
