typical morning

Posted on Jun 1st, 2009 by Bird : Bird Bird
I snuggle up to my big blue fancy chicken by kissing her chest next to her wing.  She jumps on that perch when she sees me coming --requesting a little TLC.  I have it set up so that as I'm pulling the water bowl out of the cage next to it, she can nibble at my sleeve gently and squeal.  She gets a kick out of being just a little bit bad.  When she first started this I was careful not to scold her and make her hard.  I softened her up instead and smoothed her out.  If she tried to touch me forcefully, I touched her softly.  If she touched me softly I touched her more intimately.  I know what to expect because she knows what to expect.  The more gentleness she can handle, the more I give!

I go over to the gray and stick my head through the door.  He's on a perch above me.  I twist my neck up to meet his beak.  He places it under my nose and pushes.  A little hug-kiss.  He steps down onto my outstretched fingers and I set him on the door of his cage.  I blow warm breath beneath his wings as I brush his heart and both feet with my lips.  He loves triangle kisses.  We practice petting.  He's very shy about having a hand come up from behind and land on his back.  I sneak it over from the side as I lift him up to my cheek.  Standing still for this doesn't come naturally to him even after ten years of doing this everyday.  I've found the only time I get bitten is when I stop trying and he's looking for a way to get some one on one time with me.  If I don't stop.  There's no reason to make demands.  So now I don't stop.

I flip the senegal upside down as I lift him off the bowl on the door.  He says, "Hey you!"  as I kiss, kiss, kiss his belly.  I snuggle him against my cheek and reach over to rub the sun conure.  The ringneck postures and sings to me assuming the position.  She kinda freezes up when I'm touching her so I wrap my palm around her whole body and head.  The only thing showing is her beak.  She likes this.  The white parakeet plummets to the floor trying to lure me into picking her up.  The moon conure plays with my hair.  I reach over to the dozing cockatiel and awaken him from his revelry.  He starts a little before realizing it's only me.  "Get up!" I cluck.

What a relationship you have with those winged creatures… thank you for the little glimpse. It's a treat to get a taste of their personalities. :)

Echoing Siona…you have an amazing relationship with your birds.  (Because you really ARE one?  ha ha)  Anyway, I was thinking how I wish parents-to-be knew what you already know with your winged ones.  Softening up and smoothing out.  What a wonderful bird mama you are.  It's an honor to read about your typical day.

Thanks for the kind words.  Chokes me up!  So sweet to know you can see what I see.

I met a lady who is with her bishon griffons the way I am with birds.  We recognized one another immediately although we'd never met.  Suddenly we were talking in shorthand way up here <hand over head>.  She rescued an african gray and an amazon.  I'm going to her house for the first time tomorrow to meet them.  She asked me to “model” how I am with birds so that she can be that way too.  I'll let you know how it goes!
