AVIARY

We're cutting the concrete board and buying the new tile today. My aviary is getting a face lift. We even explored heating the floor, but you have to use a cork mat to keep the heat from escaping into the concrete slab. It just doesn't sound efficient in a room where I really need to heat the air for my tiny winged creatures.
Buck rebuilt all the window frames. We got rid of the third window .... the one stacked on the bottom. It was positioned just a few inches above the floor. I couldn't keep it dry. This time we're building the room like a big shower.
Next we'll reconstruct the ceiling, but that can wait awhile. With no trees to keep the rain out of my screened in porch in the summer, there's no way to protect half of my aviary (below it) from moisture damage. Admittedly, it's not much rain, but you can still see the water spots on the foamy tiles. Bad show!

Sounds like a fine construction project! We're adding on to our garage, as Barry has a fixer-upper boat he wants to work on over the winter. Also today (I've been informed) we're splitting wood again. I'll bet your birds will like the face lift. Btw, I was thinking last night, how much of a bird's spirit you really are. I have never met anyone quite like you.
Centria,
That makes me smile. Yours sounds like a great project too! I'll post some pictures when we get it done.
We're creating a lot more peace with new set-up. After living in a flight cage for several years, it's a bit of a relief for all those participating birds to get out of that dynamic and just be with the birds each gets along with. There is a freedom of movement they'll be missing, but it's like turning off a faucet. Suddenly, the chaos is not as intense. And I get to touch the little ones now (which, of course, freaks the wild parakeets out.)
The macaw has been screaming at me, only me, a lot and plucking out feathers. The heat is kicking on … which bothers her. And with all this commotion she's a little uprooted. She wants some power … and she told me so loudly while my new neighbors stopped by yesterday. Standing behind me (inside the cage), she reached through the bars and poked her beak through the edge of my sleeve while I was talking to them. Rat fink! The neighbors were, of course, baffled. They wondered why I was ignoring the monster chewing through my shirt. I explained that she was getting a charge out of rocking the boat and it was up to me to defuse her little bomb before it exploded. So I reached in and handed them my senegal and we kissed and petted him. A few minutes later when no one was really watching us anymore, I got inside the cage and fondled the macaw's head. She was totally mellow and sweet. Not at all the drama queen she professed to be just moments earlier.
That's about the time Heyoka says to me, “See? There is no spoon.”
Bird girl? Yeah, I always manage to see hawks flying right over my head –just when it does me some good!
This morning I awoke thinking it was necessary to send an email to someone…and with that thought…a soft white eagle fluff fell into my open hand. Guess it's time to write that email, yes? Thanks for the story. I am glad that Heyoka speaks to you.
lol –exactly like that!
